As most of you already know, I am the adopt-a-cop for Rita Murphy. I have been in and out of the school several times this year and thought it might be time to send out a short message.
As we all know by now, especially today, winter is nearly upon us, please use extra caution when driving, as roads can and will become extremely slippery, making it difficult to stop for other vehicles as well as children crossing the streets going to and from school.
We also have Halloween quickly approaching. Please remember to wear well-fitted costumes that are free of trip hazards and provide for clear visibility. Trick-or treat in pairs or groups, and only visit trusted neighborhoods and houses. Parents should always inspect their children’s treats prior to allowing them the opportunity to eat them.
Have a safe fall season! Sgt. Darrin Heinert, Bismarck Police Dept.

With Halloween around the corner your student will probably want to go trick-or-treating. Here are some SAFE HALLOWEEN tips from this school nurse.
S—Superhero accessories should be short, soft and flexible to prevent injuries.
A—Avoid trick-or-treating alone, go in groups, with an adult.
F—Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see little ones.
E—Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering
H—Have your student brush their teeth after eating candy, before they go to bed.
A—Always test Halloween make-up in a small area first to avoid break-out.
L— Leaving make-up at bed time can cause irritation. Help your child remove all make-up before bed.
L— Look both ways before crossing the street. Use crosswalks when possible.
O—Only trick-or-treat in neighborhoods familiar to you.
W—Watch your children when they are trick-or-treating.
E—Encourage well- fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
E— Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
N—Never accept rides from strangers.
By following these simple steps your student should be able to have a fun and safe Halloween. Whether your superstar decides to be a princess, a super hero, a witch, a ghost or whatever, make sure that they have a fun and safe Halloween.
