Who Can Be A Tutor?

• BPS juniors, BPS seniors, and college students in good standing are eligible to apply for an AVID tutor position

 

Why be a Tutor?

• Great resume builder; helps prepare both education majors and non-education majors to be organized leaders who manage tasks, ask questions, and lead small-groups.
• Provides more individual instruction than other practicum experiences in a unique tutoring experience. Tutorials help prepare tutors to become excellent classroom teachers while learning best teaching practices and honing classroom management skills.
• Fulfills the University of Mary’s Diversity Practicum hours and requirements!

 

What are Tutorials?

Twice each week, students engage in tutorials, in which tutors work in small groups with AVID students to analyze points of confusion (called POCs or TQs) from core classes. Tutorials operate similarly to college-study groups, where they analyze their learning in order to gain clarity. As you can learn from those who tutored in the past, it is a rewarding job; tutors often become mentors for students who have dreams of attending college.

When are Tutorials?

Every semester, every year. Tutorials are typically held on Tues/Thurs, or Mon/Weds, depending on each school's schedule. Tutorials happen during regularly-scheduled class times and will vary from site to site.
