Farm to School

Bismarck Public Schools (BPS) proudly participates in the Farm to School program, bringing fresh, locally grown produce and proteins to students every day! This year, BPS has partnered with local growers and producers to provide a variety of nutritious foods, including cucumbers, carrots, celery, peppers, tomatoes, corn, melons, and beef.

With the support of these dedicated producers, the BPS Child Nutrition team serves nearly 14,000 students daily, ensuring they have access to high-quality, nutritious meals.

What is Farm to School?

Farm to School enhances community connections to fresh, healthy food by changing food purchasing and education practices in schools and early care settings. Students benefit from:

  • Nutritious, locally sourced meals
  • Educational opportunities like school gardens and farm field trips
  • Empowerment through informed food choices

Why Farm to School Matters

Research shows that Farm to School programs:

  • Improve food security and knowledge of local food sources
  • Enhance student test scores, self-esteem, and personal growth
  • Lower school meal costs and improve staff morale
  • Strengthen the local economy by generating economic activity

Farm to School Initiatives

  1. Local Food Procurement – Sourcing and serving fresh, local foods in schools
  2. Agriculture & Nutrition Education – Engaging students in food, health, and nutrition learning
  3. Hands-on Learning – School gardens and farm field trips for experiential education

October is National Farm to School Month!

Each October, we celebrate Farm to School Month—a 31-day campaign recognizing and appreciating the connections between kids, families, and their community food systems. Join us in celebrating the benefits of fresh, local food in our schools!
