MESSAGE FROM MRS. DORRHEIM
You know Spring is on its way when it's time to move our clocks ahead an hour. After a very nice winter I think we're still all ready for spring and warmer, sunnier weather. Although it may seem early, at Sunrise we are already looking ahead to our 2024-25 school year. If you read further, you will learn more about signing your child up for Camp Ed this summer as well as how to complete a special and unique circumstances form. There is also great information about our Reading and Nutrition Month, our Morning Clubs coming to an end, and how you can help build your child's self-esteem.
MARCH IS READING MONTH
Students are taking part in many fun reading activities this month to celebrate Reading Month:
- Season 2 of the Masked Reader
- You've Been Booked Challenge
- Bookmark Challenge
- March Madness Book Bracket
- Dress--Up Days
Our Reading Month celebration will also include a BINGO for Books on Tuesday, March 26th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the gym. Join us to win new books as well as for a book exchange!
A NOTE FROM OUR SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER - MRS. CURL
A CHILD'S SELF-ESTEEM
Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between positive self esteem and good behavior. A parallel exists between how your child feels about themselves and how they act. We (parents, caregivers, grandparents, school staff, etc.) play an important role in shifting a child’s insecurity to confidence. Here are some ways to improve how your child feels about themselves.
- Give them your time-talk, share, laugh and learn together
- Give them your affection
- Build them up-when we praise our children it builds their self-esteem and self-worth
- Set clear and consistent boundaries-children test limits constantly, but when boundaries are enforced they feel secure.
- Listen to them-develop communication skills early so your child will feel comfortable talking to you about anything and everything.
- Invest in what they love-every child has special gifts and talents. Look for what they are good at naturally and help him or her develop those skills
- Give them unconditional love-our kids will fail. And when they do, be there to offer a supportive hand and show them that no mater what they are loved and they matter.
SPECIAL & UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCE FORM
As we begin looking forward to the 2024-25 school year, we start thinking about student placements wanting to ensure success for every child. All Sunrise teachers are highly qualified and strive to ensure a quality education for all students. Many parents desire to make a specific teacher request for their child. Although we do not accept specific teacher requests, we do provide the opportunity for you to share unique and special circumstances and teacher attributes you feel apply to your child. Please stop in the office to complete the form, which only takes a few minutes, before Tuesday, April 1st.
**Please understand this information will be taken into consideration, however, it does not guarantee a certain arrangement/classroom placement for a child.
NURSE NOOK
March is Nutrition Awareness Month! Approximately 50% of American adults are diagnosed with at least one chronic disease related to nutrition, highlighting the importance of lifestyle interventions to prevent or manage these conditions. Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with better health, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease. BPS wants to make sure that students learn how to make healthy nutritional choices. The week of March 4-8th was the 14th annual Fruit and Veggie week where students learned about fruits/vegetables and other health choices. Students were encouraged to bring healthy snacks to school. To help motivate the students, the classroom in each school with the highest percentage of students who brought a fruit or vegetable as a snack would win an extra recess with the school nurse. A lot of students and teachers worked hard on achieving the extra recess. Please take time and ask your student who the lucky classroom was who Rocked the Fruit and Veggie Week at Sunrise Elementary!
