Course Descriptions 6th Grade

ENGLISH 6..........Full Year - Block
Students will learn skills for effective written and oral communication by studying grammar, usage, spelling, and conventions of capitalization and punctuation. Students will gain experience with writing informative/explanatory texts, narratives, and arguments to support claims. Gaining experiences of using research to support student writing and speaking will be a focus along with integrating media and multi-media components.

SCIENCE 6..........Full Year - Block
Students will experience and learn about key concepts in the topics of astronomy, weather, environments, and models and designs. Timely special interest topics such as robotics may also be part of the study.

SOCIAL STUDIES 6......Full Year - Block
Study begins with early civilizations in SW Asia, followed by Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, Ancient Chins, and the Middle Ages. The importance of geography, political systems, difference in cultures, and the contributions and accomplishments of these early people are the focus.

MATH 6..........Full Year - Block
The choice for most 6th grade students, Math 6 is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Students focus on multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals, and converting among fractions, decimals and percent. Students begin writing equations and expressions and solving equations. Area and perimeter are also studied.

MATH 6 ACCELERATED..........Full Year - Block
Students in this course learn at an accelerated pace in order to study all of the 6th grade standards and approximately half of the 7th grade standards, In addition to the 6th grade topics, students extend their understanding of fractions and decimals to solve problems involving all rational numbers, including those with negative signs. Students also solve more complex problems involving proportions and percent.

READING 6..........Full Year - Block
Students will be taught skills and strategies for reading in the content areas (non-fiction) as well as the skills and strategies for reading literature.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 6..........Full Year (Every other day/1 period)
Students will engage in activities to promote the benefits of physical activity and set goals relating to personal fitness. They will work toward improved motor performance during modified team and/or individual sports throughout the course.

COMPUTER LITERACY 6..........Full Year (Every other day/1 period)
Students will learn and apply technology skills. They will use technology tools to communication and collaborate, to access and evaluate information, and to create and present relevant products. Students will also learn and demonstrate ethical behaviors and responsible use of technology tools.

ELECTIVES

BAND 6..........Full Year - 1 Period per Day
6th grade band gives students their first opportunity to learn to play a band instrument. Emphasis is placed on learning the fundamentals of their instrument in a like-instrument sectional setting, but there are also regularly scheduled full band rehearsals each week during the class period. Students will perform in several concerts throughout the year. It is highly recommended for 6th grade band students to attend our Bismarck Public Schools Beginner Band Camp at the beginning of August to get a jump start into the band experience.

CHOIR 6..........Full Year - 1 Period per Day
6th Grade Choir is a non-auditioned choir open to all 6th grade students. Students will learn basic concepts of proper singing techniques through daily practice. Students will develop new skills individually as well as in a choral ensemble.

ORCHESTRA 6..........Full year - 1 Period per Day
Orchestra is an elective full year course for students who play the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will be introduced to both large and small ensemble performance while continuing to develop and improve their musical skills and knowledge of literature. Students will participate in musical performances for the school and community.

PHYSICAL FITNESS 6........Semester - 1 Period per Day
Have fun while learning to maintain a healthy lifestyle! Students will be introduced to a variety of group and individual exercise programs and activities through a combination of physical activity and classroom instruction. This course will cover the basics of physical fitness *cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and muscular strength/endurance), as well as teaching students lifetime activities.

ART 6.........Semester - 1 Period per Day
Students will create works of art using beginning techniques in drawing, painting and clay sculpture. They will exploring pencil, colored pencil, tempera and clay to name a few. Art fee is $10.00 and includes the supplies needed to be successful in class.

INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY 6.........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This class will give you the opportunity to see what Technology Education has to offer you now and what it has to offer you in the 7th and 8th grades. You will learn about the history of technology and where it can take you in your future. Critical thinking, design and problem solving are a part of the activities in this class. You will be introduced to several systems of technology and may explore one or more of them through study and hands-on activities. There will also be a variety of projects the students will complete in the classroom and lab. Lab fee of $15.00

21st CENTURY LEARNING.......Semester - 1 Period per Day
This course will cover basic study skills such as communications, problem solving, technology literacy, social skills.

F.A.C.S. 6 (Family and Consumer Science)..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
FACS 6 is a course designed to give students the opportunity to explore and develop skills they will use daily in order to improve the quality of their lives today and throughout the rest of their lives. Students will explore topics such as microwave cooking and healthy snacks, proper etiquette and manners for life, hand sewing techniques and clothing repair, and making good life choices for themselves.

STEM 6..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This course will empower students to become innovators in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and math. Students will also explore careers in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Course Descriptions 7th Grade

ENGLISH 7..........Full Year - Block
This course is an integrated program consisting of library, grammar, composition, literature, and speech. The students develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, studying, and researching.

LIFE SCIENCE 7..........Full Year - Block
This course covers the scientific method, some of the tools used in the study of science, and laboratory methods. Subjects studied vary from sub-microscopic particles to the biosphere. We explore the 5 major kingdoms: bacteria, protists, fungi, plants and animals. We also study and discuss mankind's relationship of interacting with the many different types of ecosystems.

GLOBAL STUDIES WESTERN HEMISPHERE......Full Year - Block
"The Western Hemisphere" is a course that examines Antarctica, South America, Central America, the West Indies, and the United States and Canada. Special emphasis is placed on the interdependence of these regions in the areas of economics, culture, religion, trade, and government.

COMMUNICATIONS 7..........Semester -Block
Speaking and listening while integrating media to emphasize key points are the focal points of this course. The first quarter students will be emerged in skills that will prepare them to compose a formal speech using facts, details and descriptions. Students will continuously be working on logical sequencing of information while using appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciations. The second quarter students will use group communication skills to market a product using creative ad writing in magazines, billboards, and writing and recording commercials. These second quarter projects will culminate in a group presentation to a panel of judges. Throughout the semester students will be using communications skills to clarify claims and identify reasons for speaking.

COMMUNICATIONS LAB 7..........Semester -Block
This is a semester class called Communications Lab 7. As a lab, this course will serve as a support to the overall academic, social and emotional well-being of students. There are three main components to this class: Second Step, Service Learning, Support Academic Success.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 7..........Full Year (Every other day/1 period)
This is a semester course that introduces life time sports and activities. It promotes and encourages a healthy life style. Some of the sports and activities include fitness testing, running, exercising, softball, soccer, flag football, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, archery, and badminton.

HEALTH 7..........Full Year (Every other day/1 period)
This course is designed for influencing the behavior of the individuals and improving their understanding of physical, mental and social health. Topics covered include chemical dependence, stress, mental health, nutrition, human sexuality, and the life cycle.

MATH 7..........Full Year - Block
The choice of most seventh graders, Math 7, reviews the four operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. The three types of percents plus formulas for perimeter, area, volume, and prime factoring are studied.

MATH 8..........Full Year - Block
Math 8 introduces the student to working with integers, solving two operations equations, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers. The course teaches students to solve problems algebraically, multiplying and factoring monomial and polynomials, and graphing. Students will be recommended for Math 8 based upon their performance on the district math assessment test, their math scores indicated on the NDSA, MAP assessment, and their grades received in elementary math. Other criteria such as involvement in co-curricular activities, capacity for daily homework, recommendation of sixth grade teacher, and study habits, should also be considered.

ELECTIVES

SPANISH EXPLORATORY.........Semester - 1 Period per Day
Spanish Exploratory is designed to introduce students to the basic grammar and word order of the Spanish language, general vocabulary and expressions, and cultural insights. In addition to daily work, quizzes and tests, students participate in listening activities, oral activities, and vocabulary-based projects.

GERMAN EXPLORATORY..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
German Exploratory is designed to introduce students to the German language. The emphasis of this class is on building vocabulary. There is also some discussion on German culture. Students can also expect to learn some basic conversational exchanges.

BAND 7..........Full Year - 1 Period per Day
The band meets daily, with basic fundamentals being taught. They will perform at concerts and may participate in the music festival as a soloist or in an ensemble. The Jazz Band is an extra curricular activity and auditions are held in the fall for this group.

CHOIR 7..........Full Year - 1 Period per Day
A vocal elective for music students, this class meets daily for one semester or the full year. Music reading, vocalizing, and harmonizing are stressed. This group performs at concerts. Members of 7th grade choir have the opportunity to participate in ACDA honor choirs and elementary music festival if they take a full year of Choir. A SHOW CHOIR is made up of many members of the Concert Choir who are enrolled an entire year of choir and members are selected by audition. The Show Choir is extracurricular and it performs popular, choreographed music at concerts and other functions.

ORCHESTRA 7..........Full year - 1 Period per Day
Playing skills and music theory activities are utilized to develop a well-rounded orchestral player. Required performances include school concerts and tour opportunities.

ART 7.........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This standards-based-course provides students opportunities to develop an appreciation for the visual arts. Classroom activities provide students with a variety of experiences in art theory and practice. Projects in drawing, painting, ceramics, design, along with some art history create an environment to develop an interest and appreciation for visual arts. Art fee is $10.00 and includes the supplies needed to be successful in class.

EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY 7.........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This course explores the world of technology and basic application. Students will engage in real life applications exploring engineering concepts, construction, testing and other engaging activities. Students will learn about flight, GPS, rocketry, basic woodworking skills, and computer applications. The course may also include modular technology units which engage the students in hands on application through computer-guided instruction. There will also be a variety of projects the students will complete in the classroom and lab. Lab fee of $15.00

BODY MANAGEMENT 7........Semester - 1 Period per Day
Components of this class include exercise programs (including circuit training, jogging/walking, and other strong cardio activities), self-image, self-esteem, nutrition/nutrients, menu planning and sport conditioning. There will be classroom education and physical activities.

READING PRO 7.......Semester - 1 Period per Day
For students who enjoy reading, this class will develop advanced skills and strategies in reading through various forms of literature. Students will not only review skills but will analyze more challenging text through discussion and reflection.

F.A.C.S. 7 (Family and Consumer Science)..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This course is designed to expose students to a broad range of daily living skills. Students will explore areas of nutritious snacking, child care, sewing skills, and clothing care. Lab fee from $5.00-$10.00.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 7..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
Computer Applications 7 is designed to teach students how to use technology tools as a work and personal tool. A variety of applications for word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, and presentations will be used. Students will learn efficient ways to use the Internet to retrieve information and will demonstrate skills in evaluating the information. Computer science concepts including various hardware components, technical and online reading, note taking, critical thinking, and problem solving skills are emphasized throughout the course. The course emphasizes responsible use and the application of technology skills to other areas of the curriculum.

STEM 7..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
this course will empower students to become innovators in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students will also explore careers int he areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Course Descriptions 8th Grade

ENGLISH 8..........Full year - Block
This course covers grammar, the eight parts of speech and their usage, and composition including sentence and paragraph writing as the areas of main concern the first semester, along with drama and the short story. The second semester will include study of the novel, poetry, and the short story, and composition activities with these units. Vocabulary and spelling are an important part of both semesters' work.

UNITED STATES HISTORY..........Full year - Block
This course covers the growth of the United States from the time of the Revolutionary war to the Reconstruction period. It includes a study of the United States Constitution and places special emphasis on the 19th Century.

EARTH SCIENCE 8..........Full year - Block
Earth Science consists of one semester of geology, and one quarter each of astronomy and weather. The course discusses all forms of earth's processes.

CAREER EDUCATION..........Full Year (Every other day/1 period)
Students will explore various career options and learn how to prepare for the job hunt. They will understand more about themselves and their skills through various interest and aptitude inventories, the use of the Career Outlook newspaper, and the Choice Explorer software. Students will research potential jobs/careers, complete a job application, write a cover letter, a personal resume, and be introduced to the interview process. Several guest speakers from the community will be included to provide their expertise.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 8..........Full year (Every other day/1 period)
Physical fitness testing occurs each year. The following units are done throughout the semester: soccer, flag football, jogging, physical fitness, badminton, volleyball, archery, square dancing, and basketball.

MATH 8..........Full year - Block
Math 8 introduces the student to working with integers, solving two operations equations, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers. It teaches them to solve problems algebraically, multiplying and factoring monomial and polynomials, and graphing.

ALGEBRA I..........1 credit..........Full year - Block (This is a class that carries high school credit and counts on a student's high school grade point average.)
Algebra I is a branch of mathematics that includes the use of variables to express general rules about numbers, number relationships, and operations. This is the first course in the traditional college preparatory sequence. This course will also be beneficial for anyone interested in a career in technical education.

NORTH DAKOTA STUDIES...........Semester - Block
North Dakota studies reviews various aspects of the state of North Dakota beginning with early history and includes government, economics, people, and special topics.

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION.......Semester - Block
Students will learn and apply technology skills. They will use technology tools to communication and collaborate, to access and evaluate information, and to create and present relevant products. Students will also learn and demonstrate ethical behaviors and responsible use of technology tools.


ELECTIVES

This course will present the students with various opportunities to explore careers and other activities in technology. The course will also include modular technology units which engage the students in hands on application through computer-guided instruction. Hands on projects may include CO2 Cars and a woodworking project. Lab Fee $20.00

F.A.C.S. 8 (Family and Consumer Science)..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This course is designed to teach hands-on skills. Application of academic concepts, such as math skills, that are related to measuring in sewing and cooking. Following directions is emphasized in the sewing and cooking units. Food preparation and nutrition provide real life experiences from the present to the future. Lab fee $10.50-$14.50 depending on project.

ART 8..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This elective class expands on the seventh grade standards-based art curriculum with additional opportunities in art theory and practice. The students broaden their art experiences through a variety of activities in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, print making, and art history. Art fee is $15.00 and includes supplies needed to be successful in class.

EXPLORING WEIGHT TRAINING 8......Semester - 1 Period per Day
Students will begin to learn proper weight training techniques and safety rules. Programs will be provided to teach students how proper weight training can be a beneficial lifetime activity. Some aerobic activities will be included with the lifting programs. This class will also begin to explore basic human anatomy and muscle functions.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 2 - 8..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
Computer Applications 8 focuses on the application of student's current technology skills to produce creative and relevant products. Students will use progressively more advanced features of a variety of applications and will integrate multiple applications to produce final products. Students will be able to create original content such as audio files, graphics, photos, etc. and efficiently transfer and edit them to create a final product. Students demonstrate responsible use, effective digital collaboration, and fluid use of technology tools to solve problems. Students will make decisions about the best technology too for the problem/task at hand.

SPANISH EXPLORATORY 8..........Semester - 1 Period per Day
This course is designed for students with little or no exposure to the Spanish language. We will focus on basic phrases that will enable you to communicate with native Spanish speakers in everyday situations. A few cultural points will also be woven into the class.

READING PRO 8......Semester - 1 Period per Day
For students who enjoy reading, this class will develop advanced skills and strategies in reading through various forms of literature. Students will not only review skills but will analyze more challenging text through discussion and reflection.
