Course Information

3D Modeling and Design

(Formerly Engineering & 3-D Design I)
Grade Placement: 10, 11, 12……….1 credit (Block Class) ……….Semester 1 or 2
Using professional software, students will develop the technical skills necessary for drawing products and modifying existing products. Solidworks will be the professional design software used in this class. Using a design process, students will build models and or prototypes in a lab environment. Students will be required to learn tool operation and safety for working in the shop.

Architectural Design

Grade Placement: 10, 11, 12……….1 credit (Block Class) ……….Semester 1 or 2
Architectural Design students will master the technical skills of the industry software, Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), and in the process will produce architectural plans and 3D computer models. In addition, students will sketch floor plans, conduct materials tests, and build scale architectural models from sketches and blueprints. Bismarck-Mandan architects will provide professional insights into the architectural design process and local projects.

Building Systems

Grade Placement: 9, 10, 11, 12……….1 credit (Block Class) ……….Semester 1 or 2
The Building Systems course explores the various systems required for a commercial or residential building. Students learn construction skills building basic structural components to complete structures and how these structures work together to provide a secure building. However, the majority of the course focuses on the systems inside the structure such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and communications wiring.

Energy Production and Process Technology

(Formerly Energy and Power Technology)
Grade Placement: 10, 11, 12……….1 credit (Block Class) ………Semester 1 or 2
In the Energy and Power course, students explore the concept of energy generation and power distribution. Students build various generators, motors, and mechanisms that utilize a variety of energy sources. Students examine various forms of energy including mechanical, chemical, nuclear, electrical, and heat energy. Students also examine and verify the law of conservation of energy. Students perform tests to transform energy from one form to another.

Foundations of Technology

Grade Placement: 9, 10.......1 credit (Block Class)......Semester 1 or 2
Introduces students to the world of technology through group and individual activities that engage them in creating ideas, developing innovations, and engineering practical solutions. Activities include: tool safety, Co2 car dragsters and wind tunnel; energy, power and mechanics unit; problem solving activities, Google Sketchup, designing and manufacturing with the wood lathe; small wood project manufacturing; laser engraver projects, bridge engineering and design, and practical skills.

Home/Office Networking

Grade Placement: 9, 10, 11, 12...... 1 credit (Block Class) ...... Semester 1
Learn how to design, install, and manage small networks of wireless routers, computers, printers, and other devices used in a home or small office. This hands-on course will provide experience in setting up security and other networking policies needed for a fast, safe network. Innovations such as social networking, cloud computing, e-commerce, web conferencing, and desktop virtualization are changing the way we live, work, play, and learn. These capabilities are all powered by networks. Organizations in the state and around the world are experiencing a shortage of qualified workers. Students who gain knowledge and experience through these courses can earn industry certification and help fill hundreds of jobs in ND and an estimated eight million networking jobs around the world.

Robotics Engineering

Grade Placement: 9, 10, 11, 12………1 credit (Block Class) ……… Semester 1 or 2
Robotics Engineering will provide the student with an overall study of robots and radio controlled engineering systems. The class will study robotic physics, mechanical, and electrical systems through relevant activities and projects. The robotic equipment used for this class will be Vex Robotics and NXT Systems. Students will be required to learn tool operation and safety for working in the shop.
