Occupational therapy practice in the schools is focused on assisting students to meaningfully participate in the educational setting. "Occupational Therapy" is defined under federal law as: "services provided by a qualified occupational therapist, and includes improving, developing or restoring functions impaired or lost through illness, injury, or deprivation; improving ability to perform tasks for independent functioning if functions are impaired or lost; and preventing, through early intervention, initial or further impairment or loss of function".
Services available to eligible students may include assistance/instruction related to handwriting, activities of daily living, positioning, keyboarding, oral motor/feeding, and self-regulation. Occupational therapists also may address assistive technology needs of students.
The Bismarck Special Education Department employs four Occupational Therapists and three Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants.
