BPS students may be eligible for special education services if they have mental retardation. "Mental retardation" is defined under federal law as "significantly sub-average general intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period that adversely affects a child's educational performance".
A full range of services are available to students in the least restrictive environment possible. Most supports and services are provided to students in their general education classrooms within their neighborhood schools. However, because each student is considered unique, IEP teams may decide to provide certain supports and services in other settings. Examples of services provided for students are: adapted and modified classroom materials, alternative academic programs and materials, daily living skills training, social skills training, assessments and evaluations, collaboration with community agencies, community-based vocational opportunities, and case management of all educational and related service activities.
The Bismarck Special Education Department's 30 teachers of students with mental retardation provide services in all of the District's sites/buildings.
