Learning Disabilities

BPS students may be eligible for special education services if they have learning disabilities. "Specific learning disability" is defined under federal law as "a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia…. The term does not include learning problems that are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor disabilities, of mental retardation, of emotional disturbance, or of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage".

A full range of services is available to students in the least restrictive environment possible. Examples of services provided for students are: adapted/modified classroom materials and instruction, alternative academic materials and instruction, and modified assessments and assessment procedures.

The Bismarck Special Education Department employs 28 teachers of students with learning disabilities.

The site features hundreds of helpful articles, monthly columns by noted experts, first person essays, children's writing and artwork, a comprehensive resource guide, very active forums, and a Yellow Pages referral directory of professionals, schools, and products.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America is the largest non-profit volunteer organization advocating for individuals with learning disabilities.
