Saxvik's schoolwide application and plan has been approved by the Title I office in the Department of Public Instruction. Beginning the 2009-2010 school year, we changed from targeted Title I services to schoolwide Title I programming.
A comprehensive needs assessment led to the following goals for Saxvik Elementary School:
1. Improve reading comprehension among all students 2. Improve math number and operations skills among all students 3. Promote a safe and positive learning and working environment
The schoolwide Title I program at Saxvik Elementary School offers research based instruction in reading and math to all students. A variety of teaching methods and materials give students the skills and strategies they need to be successful.
What Is Title I?
Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to state and local educational agencies to meet the needs of at-risk children. The goal of Title I is to provide instructional services and activities which support students in meeting the state's challenging performance standards. The Title I program will provide your child with extra educational assistance beyond the regular classroom.
What is a Schoolwide Program?
A schoolwide program uses its Title I allocation to upgrade the entire educational program of the school in order to raise academic achievement for ALL students at the school. No longer are students or teachers labeled "Title I," but instead all the students and all the teachers at the school use Title I dollars to improve the school's entire academic program.
A schoolwide program is built upon schoolwide reform strategies rather than separate, add-on services.
When an entire school is the target of change, schools serving the most disadvantaged youth can achieve success.
