Substitute Teachers

Substitute Teachers are an important resource for the Bismarck Public Schools. They provide our students with the opportunity to continue learning while their teacher is out of the classroom.

The daily rate of pay for substitute teachers is $120.00 for a full day and $60.00 for a half day.

The district uses an automated system, AESOP, to contact substitute teachers. This system allows individual substitute teachers a great deal of flexibility in setting their schedules and accepting substitute teaching positions. Substitute teachers can find and accept jobs on the Internet or by calling a 1-800 number. The system also calls substitute teachers in the morning from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. for jobs available that day and in the late afternoon and early evening for future jobs. Substitute teachers also have the option of not receiving phone calls or setting the specific time when the system will call them.

Interested in becoming a new substitute teacher for BPS for the 2016-2017 school year?

In order to substitute teach, you must have either a valid North Dakota Teaching License or an Interim Sub License. These can be obtained through the Education Standards and Practices Board.

After receiving proper licensure from the state of ND, the first step is to complete our online application through TalentEd Recruit & Hire. The link is at the bottom of this page.

After the substitute application has been completed, please call 701-323-4070 to complete necessary paperwork.

Candidates must provide their driver's license or photo identification, social security card (required for payroll), a voided check for paycheck direct deposit, and a copy of their current N.D. teaching license or interim sub license.

Technology basics

This course is perfect for substitute teachers who do not have a teaching background or those who are new to Bismarck Public Schools. If you've attended one of our training sessions before, you do not need to attend again.

TalentEd Recruit & Hire (link)

The Bismarck Public School District uses an online application process. All external applicants must complete the online application to be considered for all job openings with BPS.

The link for the internal application is found in the upper right corner at the TalentEd Recruit & Hire site. Current BPS employees can complete the internal application to apply for positions in the same category as their current job (i.e., current contracted teachers applying for a different teaching position, support staff employees applying for a different support staff position, etc.). Temporary employees and substitutes, both regular and long term, are NOT considered internal applicants and should complete the external application to apply for posted positions.
