Laura McCallum
Class of 1985


Laura McCallum graduated from Bismarck High School in 1985. She graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in broadcasting from the University of North Dakota. Since 1993, Laura has worked for Minnesota Public Radio, the largest regional public radio network in the country, and is currently the Deputy News Director. She covered the Minnesota Capitol for MPR News for eight years, reporting on former Governors Jesse Ventura and Tim Pawlenty, and led political coverage as MPR's Capitol Bureau Chief. She also covered education as a reporter. Prior to her employment with MPR, Laura worked for three public radio stations in North Dakota, and also did television and print reporting.

Laura has been the recipient of numerous state, regional and national writing awards, and has received two national awards for reporting projects she edited. She served as president of Capitolbeat, the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors, a national journalism organization dedicated to improving statehouse coverage around the country. She also served as president of the Northwest Broadcast News Association, a regional news organization representing six states.

Laura is married to investment advisor James Bryan, and they have three children: Wyatt, Bella and Max.
