Edward Lahr
Class of 1930


Edward Lahr (1913 - 2011) graduated from Bismarck High School in 1930. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Minnesota in 1934. Following graduation, he worked in accounting for Red Owl Grocery in Minneapolis, MN. Ed returned to Bismarck in 1937 to work for Investors Security Company which he later purchased and changed the name to Lahr Insurance. In 1963 he founded Lahr & Lahr Real Estate. Ed and his first wife Lillian raised their children, Gary and Kathleen, in Bismarck. Ed was a highly successful businessman known for his wise counsel and leadership.

Ed served two terms as Bismarck's mayor, and provided leadership to many organizations as well. He was president of the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce, president of Bismarck Hospital, a board member of Medcenter One Health Systems, a board member for Dakota National/Norwest Bank and Provident Life Insurance Company and chairman of the Bismarck Community Chest. He was a role model by instilling a basic philosophy of the importance of service and setting a good example in living his life with love, humor and motivation.

Ed and his second wife Erna were part of the Guinness World Record for simultaneous snow angels at the North Dakota capitol mall. At age 88, Ed was the oldest participant. Ed was quoted in the Bismarck Tribune saying "There are no cities in the United States that are a better place to live and raise your family and very few that can even approach the advantages of Bismarck."
