EV MILLER
Class of 1953

Ev Miller is a life-long resident of North Dakota, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1953. He was born near Bismarck on January 19, 1935. While at Bismarck High, Ev played on the 1953 state championship basketball team, and he was selected to the All-State Basketball team in that year. Miller attended Bismarck Junior College and was named an Outstanding Alumnus in 1983. He then attended Jamestown College, graduating in 1957. Ev was inducted into the Jamestown College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1989.

Ev began his teaching career in 1957, dedicating thirty-six years to teaching English at Bismarck High School. Miller not only taught English, but coached three sports and was English Department Chairman. He was named Bismarck Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator in 1963.

An accomplished playwright, Miller's first play, A DUSTY ECHO, won the ND Bicentennial Playwriting Contest in 1975. Many of Miller's plays deal with North Dakota and its colorful history and people. Among these are A MAN FOR THE PEOPLE, THE AUCTION, LITTLE CASINO, CRYING FROM THE EARTH and LAURA'S SONG.

Ev has published over thirty plays and has had several others produced. He was awarded the North Dakota Speech and Theatre Outstanding Creative Artist Award in 1993. In 1995, Ev was a recipient of the Bush Foundation Grant for "Playwrights of North Dakota." His plays have won nine national playwriting contests and have been finalists in several others. LITTLE CASINO was performed by the employees of Bismarck Public Schools as a benefit, as was THE AUCTION.

Ev is married to Bev Halmrast O'Brien and together they have seven children.
