Class of 1936

As a public servant, Evan Lips approached all issues as an advocate for the people of North Dakota, considering only what was right and good for the state. His life's work is a legacy to North Dakota.

Evan graduated from Bismarck High School in 1936 and from the University of North Dakota in 1941. He was captain of UND's football team in 1939.

Evan's lifetime of service began when he enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Evan then chose to return to Bismarck and enter into the life insurance profession. He served as Bismarck's mayor from 1954-1966. His vast knowledge of state law and government was astounding and served him well during a legislative tenure that spanned thirty-eight years. Evan served one year as Senate Majority Leader and several years as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee during that time. He was a highly respected statesman. Senator Lips was a passionate supporter of education and was an ardent backer of the state's colleges.

Evan Lips, in the course of his life, embodied outstanding service to his community, state and nation.
