Era Bell Thompson
Class of 1924

Era Bell Thompson grew up in North Dakota, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1924. As an African American, Thompson wrote about her experiences in North Dakota and at BHS in her book, American Daughter. She went on to become a track star at the University of North Dakota before graduating from Morningside College in Iowa, earning a degree in journalism. Thompson served as associate editor of Ebony magazine for four years. From 1951-1964 she was co-managing editor of Ebony before becoming international editor of Johnson Publishing Company. Thompson is also the author of Africa, Land of My Fathers and White on Black. Thompson was the recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award from the State of North Dakota in August 1976.
