Class of 1964

Edward T. Schafer served as North Dakota's thirtieth governor.

Ed graduated from Bismarck High School in 1964, received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Dakota and his MBA degree from the University of Denver. After graduation, he went to work at the North Dakota-based Gold Seal Company founded by his father, Harold Schafer. Ed worked in several divisions of the company, serving as President from 1978 to 1985.

In 1992, Ed was elected Governor of North Dakota and served in that capacity until 2000. During his tenure, Governor Schafer considered the formation of more jobs and a more diverse economy, a more efficient state government, and a re-energized state with a new image, his major accomplishments. Ed also provided solid leadership during the 1997 major flood and fire in Grand Forks, as well as the continuing crisis in Devils Lake and other areas throughout the state. Ed was the first governor to be married in office.

In 2003, Ed became CEO for Extend America, a North Dakota-based company providing wireless broadband technology.
