Class of 1999

Anne M. Mahlum is the Founder and President of Back on My Feet (BOMF), a strategic and unique nonprofit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of the homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. In just two years, the organization has grown to 170 members and 650 volunteers in Philadelphia and Baltimore, and plans to launch its third chapter in Washington, D.C., in 2010. BOMF has been profiled extensively in local and national media and in November of 2008, Mahlum was named one of CNN's Top 10 Heroes of the Year for her creation of the organization. She was also chosen as one of Philadelphia's 101 Young Connectors by Leadership Philadelphia.

Mahlum has raised more than $1.2 million, including in-kind donations of goods and services, for BOMF in two years. To generate revenue for the organization, Mahlum created the Philadelphia region's only 24-hour running event that attracted 1,000 people in its first year. The 20in24 Relay Challenge, Lone Ranger Ultra Marathon, Midnight Madness Run and Pajama Loop has major corporate sponsors such as Nike, Beneficial Bank and Aquafina, and is expected to raise more than $150,000 for BOMF in 2009.

Mahlum also has her own marketing and communications firm, Anne Mahlum Communications, LLC. She provides a range of services including strategic planning, social marketing, branding, media relations and website development. Prior to starting her own business and nonprofit, Mahlum spent two years as the Director of Outreach and Marketing for the Committee of Seventy, Philadelphia's premier political watchdog organization.

Mahlum attended graduate school at American University in D.C., where she obtained her master's degree in political communications in 2003. She is originally from Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High in 1999. She is an avid runner and has completed eight marathons on five different continents. It's her goal to run a marathon on every continent before the age of 30.
