I highly encourage everyone to attend the International Music Camp that is held at the International Peace Gardens every summer. This is located on the boarder of the US and Canada. Students do not need a passport to attend. Orchestra week is held during the sixth session of camp which takes place July 19-25.
Students participate in a full symphony orchestra (complete with winds, brass, and percussion) and take several classes throughout the day, including a masterclass (all students of the same instrument type), a sectional (all students of a certain section in their orchestra), fundamentals (theory) class, and a private practice hour. Advanced students may be accepted into a String Orchestra group in place of fundamentals class. Students will also enjoy recreational time as well as a planned activity every night (movie, dance, talent show, etc.).
Students eat in a dining hall located in the center of camp and stay in dormitories. There is a concession stand available for students to buy snacks throughout the day.
It may help your decision to know that I will be spending my 12th year working at the camp all summer, so I will be there as a familiar face for your student. I went to music camp myself starting the summer after 7th grade and haven't missed a summer since! It definitely was and still is the highlight of my summers.
