An Introduction to the Bismarck High School Bands

Bismarck High School 's instrumental music program is regarded as one of the school's most diversified and successful programs. It's Concert Bands, Marching Band, Jazz Bands, and other musical ensemble offerings make it one of the most visible and active programs throughout North Dakota. The program is designed to allow all students to participate in performance groups and gain a comprehensive music education. Auditions are necessary for placement in the Bands. The only prerequisite for Band membership is a passing grade in all semesters in the previous year's Band. Co-curricular groups such as Jazz Band and Ensembles are optional. All Band members are highly encouraged to be active participants and will be placed at an appropriate level that meets their interest, ability and past experience. All groups are based on a commitment to quality performance, growth in music education, and having fun!! The core and stability of the Bismarck Band program is its three curricular Bands that meet during each school day. Students are placed by audition, each with its own specific objectives and outcomes. Membership in these Bands is determined by ability with some consideration given to grade level and instrumentation needs. The Bands perform approximately three formal concerts during the school year (see the complete calendar in this Handbook).

Over the past several years, the Bismarck High School Band has maintained a reputation as an outstanding high school Band program. It is comprehensive instrumental music program that includes three concert bands, two jazz ensembles, a music theory class, numerous small ensembles and a new sectional program. Over the years many students from the program have been selected to the North Dakota All-State Band, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble.

Bismarck High School has developed an active and respected co-curricular music program. Participation opportunities include Jazz Ensemble II, clarinet choir, flute choir, saxophone ensemble, horn choir, trombone choir, percussion ensembles, brass choir, pit orchestra, and Solo and Ensemble Festival. A vast majority of students in the Band program choose to participate in one or more of these experiences. It has been our experience that students who become involved with co-curricular music groups seem to gain the most enjoyment from our program.
