Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Athletic training services for the Bismarck Public Schools is provided by Sanford Bismarck. The following Certified Athletic Trainers are employed by Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine to provide coverage for Bismarck Public School practices and events.

Defining Athletic Training

Board of Certification (BOC) Certified Athletic Trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a healthcare profession.

Practicing athletic training in North Dakota without first obtaining a State of North Dakota License is prohibited.

LAT = Licensed Athletic Trainer / ATC = Certified Athletic Trainer

New Team Structure

Beginning in 2015-16, sports medicine coverage for schools is going to be structured in teams...BHS-Wachter, CHS-Horizon, LHS-Simle...with three Certified Athletic Trainers per team. Below is a list of the schools and their ATCs.


Bismarck High School and Wachter Middle School Team



Alicia Wells
Alicia Wells, MS, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Head Athletic Trainer

Wells is employed full-time as a Certified Athletic Trainer with Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. Her primary responsibility is providing coverage for Bismarck High School. In the fall she will be at Hughes with football and then she will be at the high school in the winter and spring.

Education: A native of Watauga, SD, Wells received her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Wellness from the University of Mary in 2013 and Master's of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2015. Wells also ran NCAA Division II Cross Country and Track from 2009-2013 for the Marauders.

Wells is also currently teaching part-time at the University of Mary in the Athletic Training Education Program. Just married this summer, her husband Kyle is a rancher south of Carson, ND.

Nadine Brew
Nadine Brew, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Assistant Athletic Trainer

Brew is a Certified Athletic Trainer with Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. Her primary responsibility is providing coverage for Bismarck High School and assisting with Wachter Middle School. She also provides sports medicine coverage for United Tribes Technical College for Sanford.

Education: A native of Watford City, ND, Brew is a 2004 graduate of South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. She also earned an Associate of Applied Science degree for Physical Therapy Assistant from Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, SD, in 2008.

Tiffany Dutke
Tiffany Dutke, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer

Tiffany is a Certified Athletic Trainer enrolled in graduate classes at the University of Mary. Her primary responsibility is providing coverage for Wachter Middle School and assisting with Bismarck High School.

Education: A native of Bismarck, ND, Dutke is a 2016 graduate of the University of Mary with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in Wellness. She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Kinesiology at UMary.

Century High School and Horizon Middle School Team



Dean Chumley
Dean Chumley, LAT, ATC, CSCS

Primary Responsibility: Head Athletic Trainer

Chumley is employed full-time as a Certified Athletic Trainer with Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. His primary responsibility is providing coverage for Century High School.

Education: A native of Annandale, MN, Chumley is a 2015 graduate of St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in Coaching.

Brandy Currie, LAT, ATC
Brandy Currie, M.Ed, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Assistant Athletic Trainer

Currie is a Certified Athletic Trainer with Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. Her primary responsibility is providing coverage for Century High School and assisting with Horizon Middle School.

Currie is an Instructor in the Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Mary. Prior to moving to Bismarck, she was the Head Athletic Trainer at Desert Ridge High School in Mesa, AZ.

Education: Currie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Psychology and Health Education from the University of North Dakota in 2003 and Master's of Education degree in Educational Leadership in 2013. Her husband, Kevin, is a 4th grade teacher within BPS. They have two beautiful daughters...Brynn 7 years and Hadley 3-1/2 years...and a 1-1/2 year old son named Beckett.

Anesu Banda

Banda is a Certified Athletic Trainer enrolled in graduate classes at the University of Mary. His primary responsibility is providing coverage for Simle Middle School and Horizon Middle School and assisting with coverage at Legacy and Century High School.

Education: Banda is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, OH, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health/Athletic Training and minors in Business/Sports Leadership and Management. He is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Kinesiology and Health/Exercise Science at the University of Mary.

Adam Brewers
Adam Brewers, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Head Athletic Trainer

Brewers is employed full-time as a Certified Athletic Trainer with Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. His primary responsibility is providing coverage for Legacy High School.

Education: A native of Cottonwood, MN, Brewers received his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Wellness from the University of Mary in 2015. Brewers also played NCAA Division II Baseball for the Marauders.

Blaine Steiner
Blaine Steiner, MS, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Certified Athletic Trainer

Steiner is a Certified Athletic Trainer with Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. His primary responsibility is providing coverage for the Bismarck Public Schools ice hockey teams and the NAHL Bismarck Bobcats.

Education: A native of Bismarck, ND, Steiner received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training from the University of North Dakota in 1992 and Master of Science degree in Health, Physical Education, Recreation with a Sports Medicine emphasis from South Dakota State University in 1995.

Help out staff


The following members of the Sanford Orthopedic and Sports Medicine staff will help out with coverage of high school and middle school events when needed.

Justin Bueligen
Justin Bueligen, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Help out

Bueligen is the injury prevention program manager at Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic. Bueligen, a Certified Athletic Trainer, will coordinate the Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic injury prevention programs at the Bismarck, Dickinson and Minot locations overseeing company-based ergonomics, industrial athlete programs, pre-work screens/fit for duty testing and job-site analysis, including function job description programs.

Bueligen has been with Sanford Health since 2009 and will help provide event coverage as needed during the school year.

Josh Kuntz
Josh Kuntz, LAT, ATC

Kuntz is a Certified Athletic Trainer enrolled in graduate classes at the University of Mary. He will help provide event coverage as needed during the school year.

Education: A native of Halliday, ND, Kuntz received his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Wellness from the University of Mary in 2015. He is currently pursuing a Master's of Science in Kinesiology at UMary.

Ashley Morast, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Help out

Morast is a native of Terry, MT, and is employed as a Certified Athletic Trainer by Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine. She will help provide event coverage as needed during the school year.

Education: Morast received her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Mary in 2016. She is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at UMary.

Damian Schlinger
Damian Schlinger, MPA, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Help out

Schlinger, a Certified Athletic Trainer, is the employer relations director of the Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic in Bismarck. He will help provide event coverage as needed during the school year.

Prior to this position, Schlinger was the manager of the surgical areas at Sanford Medical Center Bismarck. Schlinger has also been manager of the western region of the Sanford Walk-in Clinics headquartered in Bismarck, injury prevention manager at Sanford Health Occupational Medicine Clinic and also worked as a Certified Athletic Trainer in the Sports Medicine department providing coverage for the Bismarck Public Schools. He has been with Sanford Health for eight years.

Education: Schlinger graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training in 2001 and received his Master's in Public Administration degree in 2009.

Bruce Schumacher
Bruce Schumacher, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Help out

Schumacher is a native of Napoleon, North Dakota and has been employed by Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine as a part time Certified Athletic Trainer, Licensed for the past six years.

Education: Schumacher has degrees in Athletic Training, Business Administration and Business Communications from the University of Mary and a Commercial Art degree from Bismarck State College.

Schumacher works full time as a loan officer at a local bank and has been employed in the financial industry for 26 years.

Nichole Sommers
Nichole Sommers, DPT, LAT, ATC

Primary Responsibility: Help out

Sommers is a member of the Sanford Sports Medicine staff. Her primary responsibility is working at Sanford Outpatient Physical Therapy. She will provide coverage at area high school sporting events as needed.

Education: Nicole received her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Mary in 2004 and Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2007.

Samantha Stroh, ATC, LAT, CSHE
Samantha Stroh, LAT, ATC, CSHE

Primary Responsibility: Lead Athletic Trainer, Sanford Bismarck Sports Medicine.

Stroh provides coverage for Bismarck State College. Prior to BSC, her primary responsibility was providing coverage for Bismarck High School.

Stroh has ten years of professional experience as a Certified/Licensed Athletic Trainer. She was born and raised in Bismarck, ND and is a graduate of Bismarck High. For the past eight years, she has been employed with Sanford Sports Medicine as a Certified/Licensed Athletic Trainer. She works with youth, high school and collegiate athletes. Stroh is also certified in Health Ergonomics. She does ergonomic assessments for all in-house employees at Sanford Health. Prior to Sanford Sports Medicine, she was employed as an Athletic Trainer for the Institute for Athletic Medicine in Minnesota.

Education: Stroh received her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Mary in 2003 and Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2006.
